The Theta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity prides itself on campus involvement, leadership development, and a strong bond of brotherhood. Every Sigma Nu holds membership in campus organizations outside of the fraternity. Currently, the VP of Public Relations and VP of Recruitment and Retention for Southern Miss’ Interfraternal Council (IFC) are members of Sigma Nu. We also have four members on GEWW Crew, 2012 and other members in various academic and interests organizations on campus.
Founded at Southern Miss in 1969, Theta Gamma was chartered exactly 100 years after Sigma Nu’s birth. At Virginia Military Institute, in 1869, a small group of incoming freshmen decided that they shouldn’t have to perform demeaning acts to gain acceptance in an oppressive student organization.
Thus, Sigma Nu was created in opposition to hazing and emphasized moral leadership. The belief that men should be treated as men, and the idea that development can take place outside of the classroom, carry on today through Theta Gamma Chapter. You can see this in our Candidate Program; which provides you, not with the burden of being a subservient “pledge”, but with the needed tools to be an effective Active member of Sigma Nu.
Theta Gamma placed in the top three for all major philanthropies held by other Greek organizations the 10-11 school year: Chi Omega's Songfest, Alpha Delta Pi's Lionshare, Delta Tau Delta's bowling tournament, and Pi Beta Phi's Arrowstrike, to mention a few. To see all of the awards our chapter has received, feel free to visit the "News" section of our website!
Not only is our chapter involved in Greek philanthropies, we are also involved in community service organizations in the Hattiesburg area, such as the Zoo Society. Weekly brotherhood activities and participation in every possible on-campus event are just a few ways members show their pride in being a part of Sigma Nu Fraternity - Theta Gamma Chapter… pride that’s evident through each and every active member and candidate for membership.
Do you want to feel the Sigma Nu effect?
On an annual basis, the Theta Gamma chapter of Sigma Nu awards one individual with the prestigious Joseph S. Paul Leadership Scholarship. This scholarship is available to all incoming freshman and transfer students at the University of Southern Mississippi that excel in academics, show a love of leadership, and a strong devotion to helping out our communities.
Additionally, applicants should show strong moral fiber, and a drive to become a leading voice concerning issues on our campus. The endowment is named after none other than Southern's own, Dr. Joe Paul, Vice President of Student Affairs. Dr. Paul is a proud Sigma Nu and a strong leader.
With this scholarship, our chapter hopes to assist up and coming leaders hold true to Dr. Paul's motto on Southern Miss: "Leave it better than you found it." Fraternity membership in Sigma Nu is not required to receive this scholarship. Click the image below to fill out our online application.
